Theater

Our goal is to provide a safe and exciting space for all students while offering them the experiences they need to enjoy a rich and fulfilling lifelong journey in the arts, no matter their intended career or life path.

Boltz has a rich history in the performing arts during its first 50 years and we are excited to continue this work into the next 50!

Theater Foundations is an elective option on the wheel for 6th grade students at Boltz.  This class is one quarter long and gives a broad set of experiences meant to highlight not only preparation in skills associated with acting, but also in all areas of technical theater that the students might find beneficial in future theater experiences.

Introduction to Technical Theater

Is an elective option for 7th and 8th grade students wishing to dig deeper into both acting and technical theater.  This is a CTE Middle School Certified program that aligns with programming at the high school level.  Our aim is to give students deeper experiences in both acting/stage preparation and technical theater concepts.  Each unit focuses on both an acting concept/scene and a technical concept that aligns.  For example, when students study monologues they will design their costumes and props.  A unit on set design will accompany a large group scene.

Fall Play

The fall play is offered as an ELO in our fall semester.  Each year is approached in a unique fashion based on the students involved.  This year we are creating a sketch comedy show that finds its roots in vaudeville.  Next year could be a one act play.  The year after, the students could write the show.  The class has both cast and crew from 7th and 8th grade involved with an aim of building skills in theater, but more importantly, problem solving as a group around a creative process.  Production dates and other information can be found at the link below.

A broad understanding of theater, how to prepare scenes, work backstage in technical concepts, and effectively interact as a team/cast are a focus.  Monologues, scenes, short plays, audition preparation, and improvisation are also a part of our classes.  In the technical realm basic concepts of lighting, sound, set design, costuming, props, makeup and safety are reviewed.

Musical Theater

Little Mermaid, Jr.

Musical Theater is a one-semester class for 7th and 8th grade students during the spring semester.  Additionally we offer a musical theater tech class for students wishing to help design, build, and run the show as a crew member.  The class also collaborates with our dance program in the production of the show.   In this class, students learn about singing, acting, and dancing in musical performances.  Information about this year’s production will be updated as the class is formed and the early stages of the show’s preparation are underway.

More information about the theater arts programs can be found under Resources (on the left) or at this link. http://tinyurl.com/boltz-choir-and-drama

Show tickets will be available in November for the Fall Play and March for the musical.
